I’m not here to brag, honest, I swear. Two years ago I set the intention in my life to have visited 30 countries by the time I was 30. It was at this time also that I was in full preparation of opening a business and there was no way those two plans would have meshed together. As the business began making less and less sense, the prospect of traveling became more and more feasible.
As it stood, at 27 years of age, I had only visited twelve countries, including the one I was born in. And I know, only twelve countries, poor me. But as a person who loves travel, this number was far less than I would have hoped for at my age. Also, it is worth noting that seven of these destinations were cruise ports so honestly, how much of those countries did I really see?
Twelve countries down, eighteen to go. I am 29 years old. The clock is ticking.
Now what does it mean to “visit a country?” By one friend’s standards, it is anywhere you have a beer and a poop. Others say it is anywhere you simply pass through. To me, I think a qualifying visit is to have some kind of experience. By my standards, I am confident in my list and don’t feel as if I am cheating. To me, cheating would be counting Bosnia when all we did was pass through on our way to Dubrovnik.
Since February, we have visited Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and Croatia. In Croatia we decided to go from Balkans to Baltics and flew to Estonia. Our slow paced way of travel has been great, but it was in Latvia that I realized we needed to seriously pick it up if we wanted to actualize our goals.
Now, here I sit in Germany, and sitting on number 25! It has been a crazy whirlwind of travels the past few weeks, from Lithuania to Poland to Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and now Germany. Next up we have Czech Republic before heading to Thailand. That’s 27. We have three months in Southeast Asia to hit 3 more, and the question of the day is what other three countries will we hit? Vietnam and Cambodia are definitely on the list and we’re not stopping there.
China is a maybe as are the Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Brunei, Laos, Hong Kong (is this even a country?) and so on. We’re leaving all of the cards in play here. We don’t want to rule out anything and all bets are off when it comes to this leg of our trip.
I have until April 2017 to reach my magic number and I am incredibly proud and pleased to say that barring some unexpected tragedy I will meet and pass my goal. Being the pusher that I am, I already am craving more and trying to figure out how to make a mini South America trip happen that will completely crush my goals, pushing me closer to 40 countries 😀
